Happy World Food Day
October 16 was World Food Day. To mark the occasion, Eric Holt-Giménez at Food First published an outstanding analysis of the challenges facing the world, noting that despite the fact that the world produces enough food to feed everyone on each 1 ½ times the number of calories they need, nearly a billion people go hungry. At the same time, malnutrition and obesity rates are increasing, and the world’s most hungry are those that produce the food—farm workers and peasants in the global south. His analysis, and perhaps even more so his call for a new sustainable food system, are well worth the read.
