Sustainable Beer

20120713DCBSummerfestDrinkCraftBeerDeena Shanker’s “Beyond the Pale Ale: A Guide to Sustainable Beer” on Gist is a fantastic read that made me want to start a whole new line of research.  Shanker traces the debates over sustainability in the context of brewing: craft beer vs. industrial beer, ingredient sourcing, organic vs. traditional, and clean energy in production. There are 2,100 craft brewers in the United States today,  leading Shanker to conclude, “Drink responsibly: Go local.” Sounds like good advice…and a good line for future research!
